Best Innerspring Mattress: Which One is Right for You?

The innerspring mattress is the godfather of all other mattress types. It is the very first type of mattress supported by springs. And it’s been around since the 1800s.

During the long time the innerspring mattress has been around, it has gone through many changes. The market has seen plenty of new designs, materials, and manufacturers. Yet innersprings still make up around 80% of total sales today.

And although people love the variety now available on the market, choosing the best innerspring mattress can be a tough job. There is no “one ultimate mattress” that fits everyone’s needs. You must take into consideration your personal preferences. As well as your sleeping habits, and your circumstances.

That is why the editors of What’s The Best Bed compiled a list of the best innerspring mattresses of 2018 that suit every type of sleeper.

Innerspring Mattress for Side Sleepers – The Saatva Mattress

Best innerspring mattress for side sleepers saatva with bedding

The Saatva mattress is made using a less popular design known as coil-on-coil. This design aims to produce more comfort and support for the sleeper, as well as better durability for the mattress.

Let’s take a closer look at its layers:

  1. The cover is a euro pillow top made from organic cotton. This provides the mattress with more cushioning and comfort, while adding pressure point relief.
  2. The second layer is a high-density memory foam. It provides extra support in the lumbar region, relieving the pressure points of your lower spine area.
  3. The third layer is the 4-inch pocketed coil system. This is what gives this mattress pressure point relief and maintains your spine’s natural alignment as you sleep.
  4. The fourth layer is the 7-inch Bonnell coil system, which offers faster bounce-rate, support, and breathability.
  5. The final layer is their Dual Perimeter Edge Support system. It gives stability and durability to the mattress by properly reinforcing the edges.

Firmness

The Saatva mattress comes in three levels of firmness:

  • Plush soft – rates at around 3 out of 10.
  • Luxury firm – rates at around 5 out of 10.
  • Firm – rates at around 8 out of 10.

For side sleepers the editors at What’s The Best Bed recommend going for the Luxury Firm. This will provide you with enough support and pressure point relief whilst keeping your spine in its natural position.

Pressure point relief

The Saatva mattress’s top coil layer provides pressure point relief. The shoulder and the hip are stopped from sinking too deep into the mattress when you sleep on your side.

Motion isolation

The top layer of pocketed coils also works in collaboration with the euro pillow top and lessens the effect of motion transfer.

Noise

According to critics, quite a few users have reported experiencing noise from sleeping on the Saatva mattress. 1 in 17 said the noise was significant enough to disturb their sleep.

Size

The Saatva Mattress comes in two sizes. The standard version comes at 14.5 inches tall and the slim version at 11.5 inches tall. Both versions of the Saatva mattress weigh 120 lbs.

Free trial & warranty

The Saatva company offers 120 nights of free trial, and 15 years of warranty.

Price

The Saatva mattress comes at the price of $999.

What People are Saying

The Saatva mattress comes at the rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars. People appreciate the breathability of the coil-on-coil design.

Innerspring Mattress for Back Sleepers – The Aviya mattress

back sleeper innerspring mattress aviya in a bedroom setting

Designed to suit just about any sleeper, the Aviya mattress is an especially good choice for back sleepers.

Let’s have a look at its layers to see why:

  1. Their organic cotton cover is quilted with 1 inch of high-density breathable foam. This provides the mattress with extra comfort and cushioning.
  2. The second layer of the mattress is their anti-sagging, high-density foam. This layer allows some sinking for extra pressure point relief and lumbar region support.
  3. The third layer of this mattress is support foam. It’s firmer and higher-density than the previous foam layer to provide stability and support to the coils.
  4. The fourth layer is the pocketed coil system that provides targeted pressure point relief.
  5. The fifth layer is one inch of high-density poly foam that supports the mattress with more durability and stability.

Firmness

The Aviya mattress comes in three different levels of firmness:

  • Plush – rates at 4 out of 10.
  • Luxury firm – rates at 6.5 out of 10.
  • Firm – rates at 8 out of 10.

For back sleepers the editors at What’s The Best Bed highly recommend going for the Luxury Firm. This will provide your body with just enough support to keep your spine in its natural alignment.

Pressure point relief

The pocketed coil system inside the Aviya mattress offers targeted pressure point relief. And the three layers of high-density poly foam provide great contouring and support in the lumbar region.

Motion isolation

When it comes to motion isolation, the Aviya mattress takes the gold medal. Considering this is an innerspring mattress, the motion transfer is as low as it can be.

All thanks to its design, the three layers of high-density foam absorb the motion before it reaches the coils. In other words, the mattress’s design itself keeps the motion transfer to a minimum.

Noise

Unlike our previous mattress, Aviya does not have any reports of noise.

Free trial & warranty

Aviya offers 100 nights of free trial and 10 years of warranty for their mattress. These time scales are both on the lower end of the spectrum.

Price

At the price of $1099 for a queen size, Aviya is not the cheapest innerspring mattress on our list.

What People are Saying

The Aviya mattress stands at 4.7 out of 5 stars. This is a good rating that shows the overall quality of the mattress. People enjoy its luxurious feel and the quality coil system. However, some users have complained about the long delivery waiting time.

Innerspring Mattress for Stomach Sleepers – The Brentwood Home Oceano mattress

Brentwood home innerspring hybrid mattress with a dog in a bedroom setting

The Brentwood Home Oceano mattress combines traditional spring craftsmanship and modern gel foam. It is one of their newer designs, that aims to provide the best of traditional and modern qualities fused together.

Let’s have a look at its layers:

  1. The top cover of the mattress is made from organic wool that is wrapped with Tencel stretch-knit fabric. This provides some cooling to the body, as the wool naturally wicks away moisture.
  2. The second layer is 2 inches of gel memory foam. Known to be cooling it helps with temperature control, and also provides contouring and support. All of which are perfect for a stomach sleeper.
  3. The third layer of the mattress are 2.5-inch tall pocketed micro coils. These provide great pressure point relief, preventing your stomach from sinking too deep when you sleep.
  4. The fourth layer is a transitional layer of high-density memory foam.
  5. The fifth layer is 8-inch tall pocketed coils for targeted pressure point relief.
  6. The sixth layer is 0.5-inch extra-dense foam to provide support and durability to the mattress.

Firmness

The Brentwood Home Oceano mattress is rated as a Medium Plush on the original website. An ideal firmness for a stomach sleeper.

Pressure point relief

The Brentwood Home Oceano mattress has two layers of pocketed micro coils. The top layer is shorter and works to provide support and comfort. The bottom layer is much taller and contains 5 support zones, providing targeted pressure point relief.

Motion isolation

What the Brentwood Home Oceano mattress wins at pressure point relief, it loses at motion isolation. A layer of coils is known to transfer motion more easily. And having two layers of coils in one mattress doubles that effect.

Noise

There have been some reports of noise coming from this mattress. However, nothing serious enough to disturb your sleep.

Size

The Brentwood Home Oceano mattress comes at 15.5 inches tall. A giant of a mattress that might not work with certain bed frames. The Brentwood Home Oceano mattress also weighs 135 lbs. Since it’s on the heavier side, you will not be able to move it alone.

Free trial & warranty

Brentwood Home offer 120 nights to decide if you want to keep their mattress. And if you do, you get 25-year warranty. Which is slightly longer than the industry average.

Price

The Brentwood Home Oceano mattress comes at $1495 for a queen size.

What People are Saying

The Brentwood Home Oceano mattress comes with a rating 4.7 out of 5 stars. Most people are delighted with pressure point relief and temperature control.

However, some sleepers have reported some unpleasant off-gassing that occurs from the gel memory foam.

Innerspring Mattress for Couples – The Alexander Signature mattress

Hybrid innerspring mattress for couples alexander signature by nest bedding in a bedroom setting

The Alexander Signature mattress is a copper-infused memory foam mattress with a pocketed coil system. Its low motion transfer and adaptability make it a good choice for couples.

Let’s take a look at its layers:

  1. The top cover is made from cotton/polyester blend which is quilted with 1.5 inches of gel memory foam. This naturally provides the mattress with a cooling touch and gentle cradling support.
  2. The second layer is 1.5 inches of their convoluted foam. The foam provides some pressure relief to the sleeper, while its wavy design allows for better airflow.
  3. The third layer of the mattress is another 1.5 inches of foam. Except, this is their copper-infused, latex-like foam that not only cools the mattress but also provides great response.
  4. The fourth layer is a transitional 1 inch of high-density memory foam.
  5. The fifth layer of the mattress is 8-inch tall pocketed coil system. It provides good breathability, pressure point relief, and motion isolation.

Firmness

The Alexander Signature mattress comes in three options for firmness:

  • Plush – rated at 3 out of 10.
  • Medium – rated at 6 out of 10.
  • Luxury Firm – rated at 8.5 out of 10.

For couples we recommend going for the Medium firmness as it’s a great compromise that suits most sleepers.

Pressure point relief

The Alexander Signature mattress’s 8-inch pocketed coils have a 5-zone support design. This offers great pressure point relief to the body parts that need it most. And the top layers of foam deliver additional support.

Motion isolation

The top three layers of foam do a good job at absorbing movement before it reaches the coils. This allows the mattress to have good motion isolation, making it ideal for couples.

Noise

This mattress is virtually silent. It is designed to have the coils buried deep within the foams. This retains the noise that pocketed coils may produce.

Size

The size of the Alexander Signature mattress is 12.5 inches in height. When it comes to the weight, we could only find that it fits the bracket of 100lbs and 150lbs.

Free trial & warranty

Nest Bedding offer 100 nights of free trial, an industry average. However, if you decide that the Alexander Signature mattress is a good fit for you, you will get a lifetime replacement warranty.

Price

The queen-sized Alexander Signature mattress comes at $1199.

What People are Saying

The Alexander Signature mattress comes at 4.7 out of 5 stars. People love the lack of noise and the lifetime warranty they receive.

However, some critics complained that Alexander Signature mattress can sometimes retain heat. So if you and/or your partner are very hot sleepers, perhaps this is not the best choice for you.

Innerspring Mattress for Heavy Sleepers – The Big Fig mattress

big fig hybrid innerspring mattress in a bedroom setting

The Big Fig mattress was released only in 2016, and it was received especially warm by the heavy sleepers community. This is because the Big Fig company compiled a list of the most common problems heavy sleepers have. Then, they addressed each one when designing this mattress.

Now, only two years later, the Big Fig mattress is a brand that has a secured spot on the market. And another advantage is that the Big Fig mattress comes with its own mattress foundation.

So let’s have a closer look at its layers:

  1. The fabric of the cover is blended with gel particles for a cooling effect. It is also quilted with 1 inch of foam for extra support and comfort.
  2. The second layer of the mattress is made from 0.5-inch gel-infused latex that allows the mattress to sleep cooler.
  3. The third layer is made from three sections of poly foam. In total, they come up to 3 inches and provide the mattress with support and pressure point relief.
  4. The fourth layer is a 7-inch tall pocketed coil system. This provides the mattress with support and breathability. As well as targeted pressure point relief.
  5. The fifth layer of the mattress is 3-inch thick poly foam edging. This supports other layers of the mattress and ensures that the coil system stays in place.
  6. The sixth and final layer of the mattress is their own official foundation. With its 18 slats, each at 2.5 inches wide, this foundation can hold up to five times more weight than the industry standard.

Firmness

The Big Fig mattress comes at medium-firm level of firmness. Built with heavy users in mind, it aims to provide the most optimal support.

Pressure point relief

The responsive foams, and the pocketed coil system work together to relieve the pressure points and support the body. No matter what your preferred sleeping position is, the Big Fig mattress will provide support where it’s needed.

Motion isolation

The design of pocketed coils provides really good motion isolation for an innerspring mattress. When sleeping with a partner the Big Fig mattress will isolate their movements and allow you to have a good sleep.

Noise

There have been some reports of potential noise coming from the Big Fig mattress. However, none of the critics say that it disturbs their sleep to the point that it becomes a nuisance.

Size

The Big Fig mattress comes at 13 inches tall and 120 lbs heavy. An industry average, especially for an innerspring.

Free trial & warranty

The Big Fig company offer 101 nights to figure out if their mattress is the right fit for you. If you decide that it is, you get 20-year warranty.

Price

Its complicated design brings the price tag to $1699 for a queen-sized mattress.

What People are Saying

The Big Fig mattress is rated at 4.5 out of 5 stars by its users. People love the surprisingly good motion isolation and temperature control.

However, some sleepers have complained about the lack of choice in firmness. After all, if you prefer your mattress very firm or very plush, a medium just won’t feel as comfortable as you would like it to.

Innerspring Mattress for Sleepers With Back Pain – The WinkBed mattress

one of the best innerspring mattress winkbed in a bedroom setting

The WinkBed mattress is designed specifically with people who suffer from back pain in mind. Its innovative design puts extra focus on lumbar region support and natural spine alignment.

Let’s have a look at its layers:

  1. The top layer is a breathable Tencel-covered, euro-pillow top that provides extra cushioning and support to the body as you sleep.
  2. The second layer is 2.5-inch pocketed coils that focus on supporting the foam layers above and allowing airflow.
  3. The third layer of this mattress is a 1-inch thick pad that provides support to the lumbar region.
  4. The fourth layer is 7.5-inch tall pocketed coils. These are designed with 5 support zones in mind, which help to keep the spine in its natural alignment.
  5. The fifth and final layer of this mattress is 2 inches of support foam. It supports the layers above and provides the mattress with durability.

Firmness

The WinkBed mattress comes in four choices of firmness:

  • Soft – rates at 4.5 out of 10.
  • Luxury Firm – rates at 6.5 out of 10.
  • Firm – rates at 7.5 out of 10.
  • Plus – rates at 8 out of 10.

For people with back pain the editors at What’s The Best Bed recommend going for the Luxury Firm option. It’s not too hard to be uncomfortable, yet not too soft to lack the right support for your already achy back.

Pressure point relief

The WinkBed mattress has its 3-step back relief system:

  • Step One: the Euro-pillow top provides the shoulders, back, and hips with just enough support and cushioning to ease the muscle tension.
  • Step Two: the third layer of the mattress provides targeted support to the lumbar region of your back. This prevents it from sagging and misaligning the spine.
  • Step Three: the pocketed coil system has 5 support zones. They focus on providing support where it’s needed and cushioning where it’s wanted.

Motion isolation

Because the WinkBed mattress does not contain many foam layers on top, motion isolation is not that great. The coil-on-coil design is known for its motion transfer. That, added to the lack of foam layers, creates a mattress that is motion sensitive.

Noise

The WinkBed mattress has been reported for being a little noisy. So if you are a light sleeper and you wake easily, sleeping on the WinkBed mattress is not the greatest option for you.

Size

The WinkBed mattress comes at 14.5 inches tall. Slightly taller than average, but still easy to get in and out of.

The mattress weighs 135 lbs.

Free trial & warranty

The WinkBed company allows you to sleep on their mattress for 120 nights before making the decision if you want to keep it or not. And if you decide that you do, you get a lifetime warranty.

Price

The WinkBed mattress comes at the price of $1299 for a queen size.

What people are saying

With the rating of 4.6 out of 5 stars, the WinkBed mattress is enjoyed by most sleepers. When it comes to back relief, people rate it very highly.

However, it does not provide the best motion isolation. So if you sleep with a restless partner, this may not be the best mattress for you.

Best Budget Innerspring Mattress – The Brooklyn Signature mattress

Brooklyn Bedding Signature hybrid mattress in a bedroom setting

The Brooklyn Signature mattress offers good design and technology for an affordable price. The quality meets our requirements successfully, and the price is still kept relatively low. That is why this mattress is a great option for a “budget” innerspring choice.

Let’s look at the layers:

  1. The cover is made from quilted gel foam for bounce and cooling.
  2. The top 2-inch layer of the mattress is the TitanFlex™ foam that contours like memory foam, and bounces back like latex.
  3. The second 2-inch layer is also the TitanFlex™ foam, but in denser consistency for deeper compression support.
  4. The third layer is 6-inch tall pocketed coils system. It provides the mattress with increased support and decreased motion transfer.
  5. The base is 1 inch thick high-density foam layer.

Firmness

The Brooklyn Signature mattress comes in three choices of firmness:

  • Soft – rates 4 out of 10.
  • Medium – rates 6 out of 10.
  • Firm – rates 8 out of 10.

To choose the right level of firmness you must look at your personal preferences, health, and circumstances. As for an average sleeper, What’s The Best Bed always recommends going for medium – the most versatile choice of firmness that suits most sleepers.

Pressure point relief

Although the mattress doesn’t come with targeted zone support, it relieves the pressure points relatively well. Regardless of your favorite sleeping position, you shouldn’t feel much compression on your pressure points.

Motion isolation

Motion isolation that this mattress offers is not great. If you and/or your partner both sleep calm, this shouldn’t be a problem. However, if one of your is a restless sleeper, then you may be in trouble.

Noise

The gel layers above the pocketed coils absorb the noise that would otherwise be present. This makes the mattress pretty much noiseless.

Best Eco-Friendly Innerspring Mattress – The Pure Echo Mattress

eco-friendly innerspring mattress pure echo by my green mattress in a blank white background

The Pure Echo is all-natural, hypoallergenic mattress that offers good lumbar support. Taking its aspects into consideration, our editors at What’s The Best Bed chose it as the best eco-friendly innerspring option for 2018.

Let’s have a look at its layers:

  1. The cover is made from quilted organic cotton to provide natural cooling effect.
  2. The top is all-natural wool layer for comfort and temperature control.
  3. The second layer is made from heavyweight organic cotton batting.
  4. The third layer of this mattress is 3-zoned pocketed coil system that provides pressure point relief and response.
  5. If you chose to have this mattress two-sided, the next layer will then be heavyweight organic cotton batting.
  6. And the fifth layer will be the all-natural wool layer.

Firmness

The Pure Echo mattress scores at 7.5 out of 10 when it comes to firmness. This places it in a medium-firm bracket, which is ideal for those that like to sleep a little firmer than average.

Pressure point relief

The pocketed coil system is designed with 3 support zones. This allows the pressure points get the relief they need.

Motion isolation

This mattress doesn’t have great motion isolation. Therefore, if you or your partner are a restless sleeper, this mattress will not be the best option for you.

Noise

The Pure Echo mattress is virtually silent. The heavyweight wool on both sides of the mattress absorbs any noise the pocketed coils make.

Size

Two-sided Pure Echo mattress comes at 11 inches tall and 90 lbs heavy. A relatively small mattress, that functions just as well.

Free trial & warranty

My Green Mattress offers 100 night of free trial, and 10 years of warranty. Shorter than the industry average.

Price

You can be prepared to pay $1149 for a two-sided queen-sized mattress.

What People are Saying

Scoring at 4.8 out of 5 stars, the Pure Echo mattress is definitely liked by its users. However, there have been a few reports of the mattress producing barn-like smell from the wool. But it dissipated pretty quickly, which is good.

What Makes the Best Innerspring Mattress?

The strategy we used in choosing the best innerspring mattresses for 2018 included three steps:

  • The type of coil that is used in the design
  • The gauge and coil count
  • The materials that are used in the manufacturing process

Then we took our top choices and compared them to one another. So let us begin by walking you through different types of coils.

Types of Coils

There are four main types of innerspring coils. Each one has its own advantages and disadvantages. But they all serve the same purpose – to provide you with quality sleep.

Bonnell coils

Bonnell coil is the very first type of coil ever invented. It was used to soften up the seats of horse carriages back in 1800s. And since then, it has made its way to 2018 without changing much at all.

As it is visible in the picture above, Bonnell coils are shaped like an hourglass. They have round tops and bottoms. Also, they are connected with a thick wire frame to keep the mattress in shape.

Bonnell coils are the most cost-efficient type of coils to manufacture. Therefore, they are still a popular choice for low quality budget mattresses on the market. However, their lifespan is the shortest when compared to other coil types, and their quality the lowest.

Offset coils

Offset coils took the design of Bonnell coils and improved it to give it durability and support. They are also shaped like an hourglass, but their bottoms are slightly straightened. This creates a hinging effect when the mattress is being compressed.

The double offset coils are almost the same as ordinary offset coils. Except it’s not only their bottoms that are designed to hinge together, but tops as well. This creates a more responsive and durable mattress.

The free arm offset coils look exactly the same as the previous two models. However, they are not hinged at the top or the bottom. They are free to move around individually, providing the mattress with more pressure point relief but less durability.

All three models of offset coils are relatively durable and effective when compared to Bonnell coils. Therefore, their price is higher too.

Continuous coils

Continuous coil is made from one continuous wire. It is bent into lots of S shapes or circles, and is joined by helical wire on both sides. This creates a mattress that is very durable and supportive. However, zoned pressure point relief and spinal support are practically non-existent.

Continuous coils are probably the least popular type of coils used for innerspring mattresses.

Pocketed coils (Marshall coils)

Pocketed coils, also known as Marshall coils, are by far the most popular choice of coil type in the high-quality mattress industry. Each coil is individually placed in a fabric pocket, which is then loosely connected to other pockets around it. What this design creates is a mattress with good motion isolation, pressure point relief, spinal support, and lack of noise.

Pocketed coils are also the most expensive to manufacture, placing them in a luxury bracket. However, thinking about the advantages this design offers, it’s definitely worth the price.

Understanding Coil Gauge & Coil Count

Aside from the different types of coils, innersprings also differ in coil gauge and coil count. Both of these have a major effect on the support, durability, and bounce of the mattress.

Coil gauge

Coil gauge is the measurement that shows the thickness of the wires and coils. It ranges from 12 (thickest) to 18 (thinnest). The thicker the wires and coils, the firmer the mattress will be, and the longer it will last.

Coil count

Coil count represents the number of coils that are found in the mattress. This number usually ranges from 300 (in cheaper mattresses) to 2000 (in more expensive mattresses). However, it is important to mention that the high number of coils does not necessarily mean a better quality mattress. As some scientists suggest, anything above 1000 coils stops making any difference to the way the mattress sleeps.

Pros and Cons of an Innerspring Mattress

Just as any other type of mattress, innersprings have their advantages and disadvantages. It is important to look at both to get a well-rounded picture of what you should expect when you make the purchase.

ProsCons
AffordablePotential for premature sagging
More responsiveLower overall owner satisfaction rate
BreathableShorter lifespan
Lack of odorsLess motion isolation
Wide availabilityMore potential for noise
